Art?

Okay, so I recently acquired a pop-out board…’Designed in the U.S. Made in Thailand’. A 6′3″ Anacapa designed by Al Merrick and spit out of some machine in Thailand. Anyway, surf has been small and crappy…and I was bored. Sooooo, I decided to spice it up a little with some stencils, spray paint, and an always over-priced traction pad. First, I made the stencils out of the plastic covers found on a notebook and cut them out with an exacto knife. Traced the traction pad and cut the shape out of some cardboard, I used some double sided tape to stick my ‘cardboard’ pad to the board. I didn’t want to paint the fiberglass where the traction pad was going, because I didn’t want the paint to interfere with the traction pad glue when I stuck it on. Then, I cleaned the board with denatured alcohol, sanded with 400 grit sand paper, and cleaned again with alcohol. Next, I cut some masking tape into thin strips to make some lines across the board….sprayed the first yellow coat over the masking tape, star stencil, and cardboard pad. Let that dry and then sprayed the black over the skull stencils and, finally, sprayed a UV resistant clear acrylic coat over all of it. And presto….kinda like it. Hopefully, it doesn’t fade or peel, only time will tell. I’ll try to update in a few months if it holds or not.

much better than the plain vanilla they give you, you’d think they could get the thai children to paint some cool stuff on there with the crack of a whip or two. i’d have overdone it and painted the entire thing and made it look tacky…so you did good to show restraint. how come no pics of the giant chunk missing out of my board?

Nice to see you covered up the “I am a cheap surfboard” fin stickers. I never understood why they put those things on in the first place.

Yeah those cheap stickers are just to show they have the fcs fin set-up. Still haven’t figured out why Kelly hasn’t taken them off of his board…

You can’t put lipstick on a pig.

And I say….why the fuck not? If I had a pig I’d put lipstick on her…

Hi, how has the paint job been holding out? I’m getting a new tuflite board in about a month and planning on doing a small design. Just wondering what type of paint to use (plasti-kote?) and if it’s worth going through the trouble of the top acrylic coat?
Also, how does the wax grip to the paint? I tried a paint job on an old board and the paint didn’t seem to hold well enough to the board and came off over time with the wax.
Cheers (nice design btw)

Paul…Thanks for the compliment, the paint is holding up rather nice after a quite a few good sessions and travelling. I would recommend cleaning and sanding the surface your going to paint with a fine grit sand paper and also spraying the clear coat on after, it definitely helps. Sanding and clear coats are the key to it sticking and lasting longer. I used Krylon acrylic spray paint. Good luck, liked to see it when you’re done!
